HYPNOS
EXPANDED CINEMA PROJECT
“Hypnos” is an immersive audiovisual installation that explores the human tendency to perceive familiar patterns and meaningful shapes in random stimuli and images related to the world of cosmology and biology shot in live action, without the use of CGI or AI.
THE IDEA
The whole idea behind this project comes from a very peculiar fascination: today as yesterday, ancient magical or religious rituals and art itself use the same primordial tools and means of expressions. This means art is like magic: it is the science of manipulating symbols, sounds or images to trigger changes in consciousness.
Through mesmerizing visual and auditory experiences inspired by nature and science, 'Hypnos' takes you on a captivating journey and leaving you in a state of wonder.
‘Hypnos’ inviting viewers to experience the enchanting fusion of organic abstract visuals and hauntingly beautiful soundscapes.
This project best expresses the Julia Set Lab's motto:
“We actively play to blur the boundaries between documentary and art, science and nature, everyday life and dreams.”
VISUAL TREATMENT
This series of showreels/shorts represents some of the scenarios that will make up part of the series;
The common thread of these visuals is their dilated and reflective mood and the cosmological/biological scenarios, in addition to the fact that they are artisanal, in the sense that they are not created with CGI or AI but through macro shots of fluid dynamics, optical experiments and naturalistic shots.

The 'Hypnos' experience is versatile and adaptable to diverse environments, making use of an array of cutting-edge technologies and projection techniques.
Whether through holographic projections that seem to materialize from thin air, mesmerizing immersive projections that encase viewers in a captivating visual cocoon, multiscreens that expand the dimensions of storytelling, totems that emanate symbolism and energy, sphere projections that encircle you in an otherworldly spectacle, or the intricate art of videomapping, 'Hypnos' offers a sensory journey tailored to your surroundings.
CREATIVE PROCESS
In ‘Hypnos the aesthetic choice orbits around recursive forms and fluid movements, between optical mirages, flashes, non-Euclidean forms and pareidolia phenomena. The artistic experience is characterized by the use of high-magnification footage. This type of images can develop a visual strength incomparable to that of computer graphics; generated by fluid dynamics, chemical reactions or light, instead of the contents created through algorithms, they generate an immersive experience full of enigmatic and unexpected reverberations.
In addition to the images, the sound aspect will be an integral part of the experience. In this context, targeted solutions will take into account scientific and technological research on the effects of certain frequencies and harmonies such as AMSR (autonomous meridian sensory response) and spatialized sound for an all-encompassing immersive experience
THE COLLECTIVE
‘Hypnos’, the latest addition to JSL, has been under development and testing since 2020. It can be seen as the natural evolution of a research path that is not blindly following the latest trends in terms of technologies and aims to use them in a thoughtful and innovative way.
Julia Set Lab is not new to the trend of experimenting with new immersive technologies, as seen in the works of the past years, such as the involvement with the HBO TV series "A World of Calm" and with the installation "The Blue Paradox", a work about the plastic crisis in the oceans that took place in London in 2020. In 2018 the short film 'Take One' was screened at the Satosphere in Montreal and in 2015 the VR experience “Cogito in Space” was screened at Kerkrade's Columbus Earth Theater. In 2020 ‘Àpeiron VR’ was selected at the Cannes festival in the ‘Veer 360 Cinema’ section, at the VRHAM! Festival, at the ‘Festival dei Popoli’ and at the VRExperience in Rome. In September 2023 the videomapping project 'Respiro' was selected for Tokyo Light 2023 (1minute Project Mapping Competition).
The project stems from Julia Set's need to live the present in a different way, given the fragmented and dispersed nature of our individualities today.
By giving full space to its nature of “artistic collective” Julia Set reacts to this uncertain complexity by rediscovering a true sense of Temporary Community. Expressing the diversity of points of view is the only way to recreate a new sense of connection and shared values.
‘Hypnos’ thus becomes an infinite container of visual intermittence, a reservoir of artistic freedom, a protected environment in which to experience both the joy of creating and the intent to destroy.
